Who is dear to the Lord? Bhagawan, our loving Master, Himself clearly explains to us today.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Sunday, June 14, 2015

Those devoted to the Lord are full of love; they always stand by righteousness (dharma); they speak the truth; their hearts melt with mercy; they are devoid of wrong; they avoid sin; their nature is well-founded; they will renounce everything gladly; they eat in moderation; they are engaged in doing good to others; they... have no selfishness; they aren’t worried by doubts. They won’t lend their ears to flattery but are eager to listen to the praise of the good nature of others. They have beautiful, strong, and holy character. True spiritual aspirants will endeavor to acquire the above qualities and possess a good character. Anyone who is engaged in repetition of the name (japa), penance (tapas), and sacred vows (vrata), anyone who has self-control (samyama) and discipline (niyama), anyone who has faith, patience, comradeship, kindness, and joy as well as unalloyed love (prema) towards the Lord — such a person is very dear to Me.

- Prema Vahini, Ch 48.

Devotion to the Divine will give you bliss, prosperity and peace. - BABA.

What is the barometer to be called a ‘Human being’? Bhagawan lovingly reveals to us in crystal clear terms today.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Saturday, June 13, 2015

Humans are full of love. Their hearts are springs of mercy. They are endowed with true speech. Peace is the characteristic of the human mind; it is its innate quality. There is no need to go anywhere else in search of peace. Just as gold and silver lie hidden under the earth, and pearl and coral under the sea, peace and joy lie hidden in the activities of the mind. Desirous of acquiring these hidden treasures, if one dives and turns mental activities inward, one becomes full of love. Only one who has so filled oneself with love and who lives in the light of that love can be called human. Those devoid of love are demons, monsters and subhumans. That holy quality of love will not waver in its presence; it will be ever present, without change. It is one and indivisible. Those saturated with love are incapable of spite, selfishness, injustice, wrong, and misconduct.

The Summer Course on Indian Culture & Spirituality is an initiative started by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the early seventies with an objective to expose students of the University to the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Bharath. It orients new students into Bhagawan Baba’s educational philosophy and gives them deep first hand insights into how they can directly benefit from this unique institution. This prepares them well to make the best of the rare opportunities that lie ahead of them. In the initial years this course was open to students from all universities across India. Since the 90s it became a 15-20 day programme specially for the students of the SSSIHL.

In February 2011, Bhagawan Baba blessed the Summer Course to be conducted in the first week of June each year, at the beginning of every academic year. Ever since the Summer Course is a three-day course held every year, and is attended by all students of the university and by the senior students of the Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School, Prasanthi Nilayam

This year's course commenced this morning (12 Jun 2015) at the Poorna Chandra Auditorium. Glimpses of which we offer you here.

What is our inherent weakness? How can we turn it to a strength? Bhagawan lovingly gives us a vital tip so we may progress spiritually.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Thursday, June 11, 2015

You must proceed ever towards strength (balam); you must not take to untruth, wickedness, crookedness - all of which denote a fundamental fatal trait of cowardice and weakness (Balaheenam). Weakness is born of accepting as true a lower image of yourself than you truly are.... You believe you are the husk, but you really are the kernel. This is a key fact. All your spiritual practices must be directed to the removal of the husk and the revelation of the kernel. So long as you say, “I am”, there is bound to be fear, but once you say and feel, “Aham Brahmasmi” (I am Divine), you get infinite strength. The influence of the Divine is so subtle and strong that while you are contemplating on Him, all traces of envy and greed will disappear from your mind. The pure love the cowherds (Gopis) had for Lord Krishna is a great example. This is the characteristic of Divine Incarnations at all times.

- Divine Discourse, 14 Jan 1964.

The sole purpose of Life is to transform ‘human’ to Divine, who we really are. - BABA.

Sai Humour - episodes between Lord and devotee bringing laughter and light

Aravind Balasubramanya

Jun 10 (3 days ago)

The Avatar makes use of many tools to convey His love and wisdom to humanity. Among these is humour also. Many are the incidents in which Swami's humour oozes through and arouses great laughter. Many more are those incidents where a humorous situation develops because of an interaction between the Lord and devotee.

However, are we so lost in laughing while reliving these episodes that we lose the light they bring to us? From Sathya Sai's mischievous prank in the hostel stores to the episode where a little boy seemed to embarrass Him with his spontaneous reply; from public-speaking bloopers to shocking replies to Swami's questions - all these have so much to teach us.

This is a talk delivered on the 31st of May 2015 in the Satsangh Hall at Prasanthi Nilayam.

What should we seek to gather from the spiritual books and scriptures? Bhagawan lovingly reminds us today.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Wednesday, June 10, 2015

By carrying a bundle of sandalwood, can a donkey become an elephant? The donkey will sense the difference in weight but not the scent! On the other hand, the elephant disregards the weight and inhales the sweet scent. So too, the spiritual aspirant, or devotee will take in only the pure truth, the pure... essence of good activities, of godliness and scriptures. On the other hand, one who goes on arguing for the sake of mere scholarship, learning, and disputation will know only the weight of logic, missing the scent of truth! Love (prema) is the most effective instrument for constantly remembering the Lord. Keeping that instrument safe and strong needs the power of discrimination (Viveka). Many in the world utilize their vast learning in disputation to prove their superiority; this is a great mistake. If they really were so learned, they would silently experience the core, the pure Divine.

- Prema Vahini, Ch 44.

Education should promote discrimination and humility. -BABA.

What is the biggest obstacle to us being near and dear to the Lord? How can we overcome the obstacle? Our Loving Master shows us the way.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Tuesday, June 9, 2015

The Master comes to save not one good person from illusion, but the whole of mankind. He assumes a Form that people can love, appreciate and revere. He gives joy and courage by speaking your language. The only blemish that comes in between your mind and the Master is illu...sion. Illusion is like a fierce dog that will not allow anyone to approach the Master. You can manage to bypass it by calling out to the Master loudly so that He Himself comes down and accompanies you to His home. That is to say, you must win the Lord’s Grace to attain His proximity (Saameepyam). Illusion is the Lord’s pet, so it will not harm you if the Lord orders it to desist from harming you. So just as you give the goldsmith a broken or a dented ornament and receive a fine jewel back, entrust your mind to the Lord. It certainly needs repair, if not complete reconstruction.

- Divine Discourse Jan 1, 1964

When your mind is filled with noble thoughts such as truth, love, forbearance and compassion, your life will be full of peace and joy. - BABA

How to get rid of the harmful ego? And as aspirants what is the one physical trait we must endeavour to develop? Bhagawan lovingly explains to us today.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Monday, June 8, 2015

Inclinations (vasanas) won’t disappear as long as one’s heart is full of the illusion of egotism, even if one is immersed in many heart-purifying spiritual disciplines. Such people, if they want to get rid of the feeling of ‘I’ and ‘mine’, must worship the Lord.... One whose heart is ruled by the group of six passions can have only ego as counselor! Those who have such a counselor are worse than foolish, however great they claim to be as pundits, aspirants, or renunciants. People experience joy and misery through the ear. Therefore avoiding the cruel arrows of hard words, one should use sweet, pleasant and soft ones — and with that softness, add the sweetness of truth. Making the word soft by adding falsehood only clears the way for more misery. A person who has become a spiritual aspirant should use very soft, sweet, true, and pleasant words. Such a person can be recognised by their good qualities.

- Prema Vahini, Ch 43.

Believe that God resides in all beings. Speak such words as would spread goodness, truth and beauty.-BABA

And the drought is here...

By chemburDust

Jun 5

Om Sri Sairam

Today is World Environment day.
Atleast on this day we should spare a
few min and look at the devastation
that is playing out as a result of
our fierce manipulation of Nature around us
to serve our selfish agenda..
And do our bit for course correction..

Open any newspaper.
Now the drought is here for sure.
'El Nino' they may say.
'Pain' by any name hurts.

We are not natives of the water domain
powered by its knowledge bytes..
But we learnt to touch the experts of the field
to pitch in and make a difference in lives of many..

Our efforts to retain rainwater
in any format, anywhere in the village
resulted in 26 villages getting the benefit
and 12 more still at it to complete soon..
(Sholapur 1, Yavatmal 3, Nashik 5, Nagpur 1 and Sangli 2)

Our focus is to configure low cost models that can be
monitored in weekends by us (being working professionals)
involving a local champion from the Project Village.

A typical village project just completed by us
(written about earlier) carries a message.

The village is located near Badlapur Maharashtra.
The village water sources go dry during summer and
typically the women folk walk 3-4 kms to the nearest source
and bring headloads climbing a hill.

The Govt built 40 new toilets .
But due to lack of water all of them remained unused.

40 such new toilets remained unused due to water scarcity

Our team surveyed the village and identified
a spot to recharge a new borewell that yielded water,
supported by Rainwater harvesting
through percolation pits and small check dams nearby
as suggested by experts. Project done
with low cost models and Shram dhan
by villagers and our volunteers.

We conducted an awareness campaign
and promoted the usage of the toilets
now that the new found water is available.
Many villagers started using them now.

As green cover is another missing piece
contributing majorly to the spike in temperature,
we wanted to promote plantation and gave
saplings of fruit bearing trees and seeds
calling it "Sri Sathya Sai Vruksha Seva"
to each house in the village on 30th May 2015.
It was so touching to hear a group of women
pledging that they would nurture the plants like their kids.
(Tree plantation is a national Priority for our organisation.)

Sri Sathya Sai Vruksha Seva by our team..

Our team Sai Youth distributing saplings....

All of us are stake holders in the eco system.
Time has come to step out of our comfort zones
and lend a hand in whatever way possible.

In about a couple of lacs, a village
can get Rainwater recharging existing borewell,
desilted Village pond and water bodies
besides fruit bearing tree-saplings and seeds
for each household.

Villagers say that waiting for Govt to do all these will be futile.
But waiting for Villagers themselves to do will be a non starter.
Waiting for Institutions to get the right-fit solutions
may end up in academic exercises and PPTs
unless they reach out and demonstrate at ground Zero
and scale up fast to beimpactful.

The resourceful communities nearshore
who can empathise with the misery of the suffering
can stretch out and do their bit however small
and unstructured their efforts are.
Some water is better than no water.

We visited a village - Loej in Junagadh
where the illiterate village women
harvest the rooftop rainwater and store
in an underground tank built by the family
and drawn by handpump during summer
for drinking. We drank the water of last monsoon.
Low cost. Effective solution. Entire village does it.

Village Loej nr Junagadh - Illiterate housewives do Rooftop rainwater harvesting .
This lady in pic taught us how to do it with broken pipes and discarded household materials..
(see the roof lining..)

True . By our Metro scale it may not be big ticket
we are used to and hence may not get any airtime..
But these are certainly
Big-bang-for-the-small-buck..cases worth giving a try.

Just step out*and stretch out the hand.
If not the entire sinking lot
even if a couple of them come ashore
thanks to your efforts, its
Paisa-vasool moment for the heart.

Take a U turn in the next signal of the mind lane-
from "What-to-get-this-weekend" to
"What-to-give-this-Weekend"
And watch you are never weakened by weekends.

The 'evil' acting does not cause damage
as much as the 'good' not acting when needed...

Step out . Serve . And Save the suffering..

"Service rendered to villagers, who are denied the ways and means ofdecent lives, draws Divine Grace, more than service elsewhere. Give a helping hand to the helpless, who are afflicted with many ailments and handicaps.

....Do not indulge in lectures. Action alone can inspire action.
Example alone can instruct...."

- Sri Sathya Sai Baba
Discourse at Poornachandra Auditorium on 21-11-1986.

Everyone aspires to progress spiritually. How can we ensure we achieve progress? Bhagawan clearly gives us a message today using a simple yet powerful example.

...Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Sunday, June 7, 2015

The minute hand of the clock is the individual soul. It goes round and round - the hour hand does move, silently and slowly, with dignity. The hour hand is the Supreme Soul. Once in an hour, these two meet, but the individual soul does not get that consummation fixed forever. It loses the precious chance, and so has to go round and round again. Liberation happens when the two merges and there is just one. Like the silkworm that spins from out of itself the cocoon that proves to be its tomb, people spin from out of their own mind, the cage in which they get trapped. Assign your mind the task of serving the Lord and it will grow tame. Give your mind to the Lord. Forget the past and don’t worry about errors in future. Bring to memory only those things that are worth remembering and assiduously follow your spiritual practices. You will achieve spiritual progress.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 1, 1964.

We are powerless before Time but Time’s Creator and Director can be won and attained by the wise use of Time. - BABA.

TALK: Distinguishing between the voice of the mind and the voice of the conscience

Aravind Balasubramanya

Dear all,

When we are forced to make life-death decisions or decisions of nearly that importance, we want to make sure that we get it absolutely right. But how does one ensure the perfect decision? Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba says that the easiest way to do this is to listen to the Conscience which is the voice of god within each one of us.

But then, how to distinguish between the voice of the conscience and the voice of the mind? There are some practical ways of doing this and these insights come straight from Swami. With a nail-biting personal experience, this gets illustrated. Also included in the talk are ways to improve our 'hearing' to the conscience and 'deafness' to the mind.

After all this comes the final problem - obeying the voice of the conscience!

This was a talk delivered in the Satsangh Hall in Prasanthi Nilayam on the 28th of May, 2015.

When should we begin the spiritual practices? Bhagawan lovingly reveals to us in crystal clear terms today.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Saturday, June 6, 2015

What is the use in planning a well when the house is on fire? Where is the time to dig now? When will water become available? When is the fire to be extinguished? It is an impossible task! If, at the very start, a well was ready, how helpful it would be on such critical occasions! Beginning to contemplate on God during the last moments is like beginning to dig the well when the house is on fire. Therefore equip yourself right now, by contemplating on God off and on, so that it will stand you in good stead when the end approaches. Start today the spiritual discipline that has to be done tomorrow! Start now what has to be done today! One doesn’t know what is in store the next moment; therefore there should be no delay in engaging in spiritual practices. For this physical stamina is also necessary, so the body has to be tended to, though over-tending causes damage. To the degree that is essential, the body should be looked after with great care.

- Prema Vahini, Ch 41.

Just as a small piece of wood becomes fire when it comes in contact with fire, so also when you are close to God mentally, you become Divine.-BABA

Dr. SARA PAVAN NO MORE

Om Sairam dearest Sai Family,

A sad news of passing out of a long time devotee, Dr. Sara Pavan, who breathed his last on June 4th 2015, battling Bone marrow cancer in Australia. Born in Srilanka , Dr. Sara Pavan served in Swami's super speciality hospital as a specialist in Anesthesia for many years. Like the present director of Swami's super hospital Dr. Voleti Chowdary, Dr. Sara Pavan was also very interested in Video and Photos and has contributed a lot to the audio visual section with some beautiful videos of Swami. He was also a good speaker, a regular name in the Satsang hall satsangs in the ashram and had a huge following among devotees especially in South America. His wife Dr. Devi is an ENT specialist who was serving in Swami's general hospital until they flew to Australia a year ago from Puttaparthi. May Swami bless this soul to rest in peace. Thank you Dr. Sara Pavan for your contribution in the Sai Mission.

SWAMI IN THE INTERVIEW ROOM:

A rare 2 minutes video of Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the interview room where He materialises vibhuthi, gold ring and some "pearls" of wisdom to the fortunate devotees. This video is subtitled into English. To watch it on YOUTUBE click this link http://goo.gl/zFV9cw

With Pranams at the Lotus feet of our beloved Lord,

R. Satish Naik

RIP Dr. Sara Pavan sir...

Your soul is definitely at His Lotus Feet. I will certainly miss your words of wisdom. I will also miss your keen insights. Will miss the stories behind the thousands of photos and videos you have so lovingly taken and offered completely to Radiosai. But what I will miss most is your infectious enthusiasm and never-say-die spirit for Swami. The moment I came to know of this news, my heart felt so sad. How we assume that people will be with us for ev...er??

I just went through many of the mails you sent me. Was it your special way of saying goodbye when you wrote in your last mail on April 21st,

"In your Thursday afternoon satsang with Prem uploaded in today’s Sai Inspires - 21 April, you used the word ATTACHMENT. Swami often responds to my wish. I asked Him to give me His definition of this word which is one of the main obstacles in our path towards Awakening and Spiritual Freedom.

Swami’s definition:
‘Attachments are addictive relationships with people and the past - events, things and beliefs.”

Keep up with your good work with enthusiasm and absolute faith that you are merely an instrument in His Hands.
With Love and best wishes
SP"

My prayer is that as you sit at His Lotus Feet, continue as our guardian angel...
Also prayers for aunty. She will need all the strength now...

Aravind Balasubramanya

Why should we not postpone our spiritual practices even for one day? Bhagawan lovingly and assertively implores us today.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Friday, June 5, 2015

These days, people are content to visualise and experience evanescent worldly joys. People have no rest. Spending the nights in sleep and days in eating and drinking, they grow and grow, until, in old age, death pursues them. Then, they can’t decide where to go or what to do; all senses have... weakened. No one and nothing can rescue them, so they end as obedient meat in the jaws of death! How sad it is that this human life, precious as an invaluable diamond that can’t be priced at all, has been cheapened to the standard of a worn-out worthless coin! There is no use repenting later without meditating on God or practising some spiritual discipline to realise Him now. It is the right of the aspirant (sadhaka) to have the vision of God and not the sight of death (Yama-darshan)!

- Prema Vahini, Ch 41.

Pure heart is the essence and purpose of all Sadhana.-BABA

What are the four stages each human being goes through? Bhagawan clearly explains giving us a hint of the experience of the different stages of spiritual progress.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Thursday, June 4, 2015

They are, according to the Veda, four stages - the waking, dream, deep sleep, and the liberated stage (turiya). In the first stage, one is awake to the objective world and is oriented outward. Since one identifies with the gross body complex at thi...s stage, the experiences are also gross. In the dream the self is in-faced. Reactions, responses, and experiences are all self-contained. They do not belong to the area outside of oneself. Next comes deep sleep (sushupti). This stage is free from even dreams. There is no feeling of either separation or identity, the particular or the universal, experiencer or experience. There is only the Atma, in which one has temporarily merged. In the fourth step (Turiya), the individual is no more so. It has attained the basic truth of life and of creation. Those who have reached this step no longer have concern with the individual self. These are four states one experiences, but they are also stages one has to go through in search of Self-Knowledge.

What is the value accorded to adhering to a timely spiritual routine? Why is it important? Bhagawan lovingly reminds us today.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Wednesday, June 3, 2015

Yama (Lord of Death) is as omnipresent as Siva! Yama is associated with the body (deha); He cannot affect the individual soul (jiva). The body is the essential vehicle for the individual soul to understand its real nature. Still, who knows when it may become the target for the attent...ion of Yama, the master of the body? Who knows when this body will get entrapped in the coils of Yama’s ropes? The individual soul, burdened with this easily destructible body, must pay attention to this fact and be all-eager to merge in Siva! People usually procrastinate tasks - yesterday’s tasks are delayed to today and today’s tasks to tomorrow. But the tasks of spiritual discipline are not of such a nature. The minute that just elapsed is beyond your grasp; so too, the approaching minute is not yours! Only that individual soul which has this understanding engraved in its heart can merge in Siva.

- Prema Vahini, Ch 39.

Do not indulge in prayer as a pastime, or a fashion, or as an unpleasant part of an imposed time-table to be fulfilled daily. – BABA.

What is the characteristic of a true devotee? Bhagawan lovingly gives us a barometer for self-evaluation today.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Tuesday, June 2, 2015

From the point of view of what one achieves at the end of the journey, there is no difference between a liberated soul (jivanmukta) and a devotee; both are beyond ego (ahamkara), nature (prakriti) with its three attributes or gunas, and the rules and regulations (Dharma) that govern the caste-stage of life (varna-ashrama). The hearts of such will be full of compassion and be filled with the urge to do good to the world. Their divine bliss born of oneness impels them to act in this way. They will have no desires, for desires are the products of feelings of ‘I’ and ‘mine’. Only after these desires are uprooted do people become true devotees, right? So there can be no room in them for desires. They are truly speaking devotees of the embodiments of immortality (amrita-swarupa). For those with that immortal nature, there can be no appetite except for the sweetness of spiritual bliss (ananda).

- Prema Vahini, Ch 39.

A true devotee filled with love for the Lord welcomes what may appear as punishment as something for their own good.-BABA

Shivashakthi Sai - The Embodiment of Supreme Conciousness

Sathya Sai was the incarnation of Shiva-Shakthi is attested by the Bharadhwaja-incident, when the great sage, visiting Kailash, thought he was neglected by Shiva and Shakthi involved in their cosmic dance; later, Shiva graced sage Bharadhwaja with a boon that He would be born thrice successively in the Bharadhwaja Gothra or lineage: first, Shiva alone as Shirdi Sai, then Shiva and Shakthi together as Sathya Sai, and Shakthi alone as Prema Sai.

The name SAAYEE or SAI itself means: Shiva-Shakthi. Etymologically, the first letter Sa(h) signifies the supreme Divinity (Eeshwara) or Shiva. Ayee, the second word signifies Shakthi, Ambaa or the universal Divine Mother. If the two letters are joined, the euphonic combination becomes Saayee.

Swami was like Shiva, who is universal, transcends caste, class, creed, country, culture etc. He is beyond all orders and categories; He is truly an embodiments of Sat Chit Ananda - Supreme Divine Consciousness.

Feel free to download this “SHIVASHAKTHI SAI” Calendar and set this as your desktop wallpaper. When we realise Shivoham (I am Shiva), then we have all the happiness, all the auspiciousness that comes from Sai. Shiva and Shakthi are not to be sought on the peak of a distant range of mountains, or in some other special Mandir. You must have heard that sin and merit are inherent in the acts that men do; so too, Shiva and Shakthi are inherent in every thought, word and deed, for they are the energy, the power, the intelligence that is behind each of them.

What yearning should every student and individual strive to foster? Bhagawan answers, thereby explaining how an education system must be.

Today’s Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam, Monday, June 1, 2015

Students of today are blind to the goal of life. Some students do not even feel the pain of not knowing the purpose of life. Only one in a million or a crore strives to realise the essence of life. This striving is the stepping stone for the realisation of the purpose of life.... Many people feel that the acquisition of food, clothing, shelter, wealth, conveniences, and comforts constitute the very purpose of life. Life remains a tragedy as long as one labours under this kind of delusion. The day one realises the purpose of life, one undergoes a total transformation, from vedana (agony) to nirvedana (freedom from pain). When one becomes conscious of light, acquires wisdom and realises the meaning of existence, one is transported from agony to ecstasy. Every bit of learning should be based on the foundation of ethical, righteous and spiritual principles. Education that is not founded on these will flounder to the ground and become useless.

- Sutra Vahini, Ch 6.

True education is that which is in consonance with the vedic statement, Tamasoma jyotirgamaya (Lead me from darkness to light). -BABA
