'Sathya Sai with Students' Blog Update - Week 59: Deepavali Special

Sai Ram,

'Sathya Sai with Students' Team wishes all its readers a HAPPY DEEPAVALI and GUJARATI NEW YEAR. This week, we present articles focussed on the theme of Deepavali reminiscing His Message and His Presence on those memorable Deepavali Days of yore...

1. Discourses to Students: Deepavali, the festival of lights is celebrated across India with great fervour and gaiety. However, there is a deep inner significance to the festival and a powerful message that each one of us needs to imbibe in our daily lives. Swami elaborates on 'The Inner Significance of Deepavali'.

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/sri-sathya-sai-explains-inner.html

2. Experiences of Students: Dr. Shailesh Shrivastava writes on the theme: "The Plane has landed: Who is the Pilot?"

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/the-plane-has-landed-who-is-pilot-by-dr.html

3. Conversations with Students: Those days were indeed memorable... Swami would come out into the portico and interact with students, staff and devotees... We recollect one such conversation on the Deepavali Day of the year 2000 - 'With Sri Sathya Sai on Deepavali Day'

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/with-sri-sathya-sai-on-deepavali-day.html

4. Management Lessons: The problem of modern business and management or for that matter any profession is that the individual is disconnected with the institution. There is lack of alignment between individual goals and institutional goals. Swami tells how 'The goals of human life are connected with the world of business'.

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/the-goals-of-human-life-and-their.html

'Sathya Sai with Students' Blog Update - Week 58: Vacation Special

Sai Ram,

The students of Sri Sathya Sai Educational Institutions completed their end semester exams yesterday, and have left for their respective homes for the Diwali vacation. So in this week's articles we focus on Swami's Message and Experiences relating to His Omnipresence and His expectations from students.

1. Discourses to Students: While students are at school or college, the institutional discipline inspires them to behave in a noble way. However, when they are on their own, there is a tendency to experiment with life. The most common question is "Can I do whatever I want to?" What will happen if I do or do not follow certain norms that Swami has laid out before me for a good life? In a Discourse to His students, Swami answers this question elaborately.

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/can-i-do-whatever-i-want.html

2. Experiences of Students: Brother Arvind Yadavalli writes on the theme: "I See... I Hear... I Know... Everything...".

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/i-see-i-hear-i-know-everything-by.html

3. Conversations with Students: In the days of yore, the vacation season was a chance for many students to get close physical interactions with Swami. We reminisce an interaction between Swami and students during the vacation of 1998 - "MAD for You, Swami"

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/mad-for-you-swami.html

4. Management Lessons: In a Discourse to the Management Students of SSSIHL over two decades ago, Swami elaborated on the five aspects of business which are its very life breath.

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/the-five-life-breaths-of-business.html

5. This Day That Age: A number of devotees have posed this question - When did Swami give His first public discourse? The answer is: It was given during this very week 67 years ago. The details of that historical occasion and a photo have been provided in this article - The First Public Discourse by Sri Sathya Sai

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/the-first-public-discourse-by-sri.html

6. Song for the Soul: "We have come to tell You our Heart's Feelings - Apne Dil Ki Pukar...". A song composed and sung by students for Swami during the Sports Meet of the year 1999-2000.

'Sathya Sai with Students' Blog Update - Week 57: Avatar Declaration Day Special

Sai Ram,

To commemorate the 73rd Avatar Declaration Day on October 20th, 2013, this week we present articles focussed on Swami's Divinity and His Story in His own words:

1. Discourses to Students: Swami is an enigma wrapped in mystery. Only He can reveal to us His true nature. In this section, we present excerpts from a few landmark discourses when Swami revealed to us: "Who is Sathya Sai?"

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/swami-tells-us-who-is-sathya-sai.html

2. Experiences of Students: Brother Manish Sharma writes on the theme: "Sri Sathya Sai in Clouds".

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/sri-sathya-sai-in-clouds.html

3. Conversations with Students: We reminisce the interaction of Swami with students in the portico when He shared with them what had happened on that eventful day of October 20th, 1940.

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/when-he-reminisced-day-he-declared-his.html

4. Management Lessons: Reward and punishment should go hand-in-hand in every organisation. The lack of this perpetuates indiscipline. Swami shares His views on this theme.

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/reward-punishment-mechanism-for.html

5. This Day That Age: The year of 1940 was an eventful year in the Avataric History. All through the year, Swami revealed His Divinity to His family members through various incidents until He finally left home and declared His Avatarhood on October 20, 1940. We recollect the series of events that happened in the year 1940.

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/the-landmark-year-of-1940-when-sri.html

6. Song for the Soul: "Sai You are in our very breath - Saason Mai Hai Tu O Sai Mere...". A song composed and sung by students for Swami during the Sports Meet of the year 2000-01.

DASARA 2013, NEWS FROM PUTTAPARTHI

Om Sairam dearest Sai Family,

Dasara 2013 was a grand celebration in the abode of our beloved Lord. It was a sight for the Gods and blessed were those whom He brought to His abode to witness such a power packed and enlightening Dasara.

Every second, every minute, every hour and every day, His presence was felt more and more and Swami would have been watching His glory with all the Gods, appreciating and lauding His children's stupendous job in spite of His physical absence be it Grama Seva, talks, musical performances, decoration, Yagna to name a few.

Dasara is a " home coming" for all the campuses as this is the longest time any campus stays in Prasanthi due to the Grama seva project. This also means some extra job for all the support staff who are behind the scenes planning each and every minute logistical detail.

As the students of the rest of India are enjoying with their families on the occasion of Dasara festival, students of Swami's institute take this opportunity to do their " karma yoga" a rare opportunity to " burn out the Karma" with a faster pace and it also gives an opportunity to " burn out few calories" as there is so much running up and down.

The Grama seva 2013 was a grand success. Thousands of Families were ecstatic to receive Swami's prasadam directly from His children at their door steps. This is so unique about Swami's grama seva. Every one in the villages, whom ever i spoke with were very happy with the quality of the sarees and dhothis, the delicious Polisadam (Tamarind rice) and so also was laddu.

CLOSING CEREMONY OF SAPTHAHA GNANA YAGNA :

The 7 day Yagna in Poornachandra Hall, came to an end on October 14, 2013 with Poornahuthi being offered exactly at 9:30am. The Poorna Chandra Hall was jampacked this morning and there were quite a few devotees who had to be seated outside. The holy water was sprinkled on every one and the students and priests were so kind to come till the last line and sprinkle the water which made every one happy.

The afternoon programme had a talk by Prof.Anil Kumar who spoke in length about the significance of Dasara. Perfectly mixing his talk in Telugu and English, he described the magnificent glory of Dasara celebrations in the physical presence of Swami and how the fire from Yagna would raise as if the Fire God is paying obeisance to Swami. Describing about Swami's beautiful smile, he sang a poem composed by Sri.Jandyala where Swami's smile is compared to the brightness of Camphor, the colour of Kamadhenu (cow), to the swan.

Describing Swami's sweet voice, he said it is sweeter than sugar cane juice, tastier than the grape juice and more vibrant than the smile of a baby..

Later he elaborated the importance of two sacred text Srimad Bhagawatam and Sri Devi Bhagawatam, which is widely read during the 9 day festival season. Quoting Swami's elaboration on Bhagawathamu he said "Bha" stands for Bhakthi, " Ga" Stands for Gnanam, " Va" stands for Vyragya, " ta" stands for Tatwa, "Mu" stands for Mukthi.

He appealed every one not to look for any other sacred texts to read as Swami has touched all the subjects under the sky and Sai Literature is a " multi vitamin capsule".

Speaking about the " Divine Effulgence" of Baba he said, once a tiny hamlet with less than 100 population is now a " center of spiritual revolution". His glory has reached by leaps and bounds. He spoke on the good work done by the devotees in Srilanka when the Tsunami first hit this tiny country, Sri Sathya Sai Sevadals were the first ones to take up the relief work, In Indonesia the youths have built 108 water tanks and appreciating the good work done in South Africa, he said in places like Johannesburg there are so many devotees who are going to the " addiction prone" localities reaching out to them and helping them to give up vices.

He later on elaborated on Tripura Sundari, Triloka Sundari and Tribhuvana Sundari.

Appreciating and highlighting the perfect " time management" of Swami, he said even prime ministers like Atala Bihari Vajpayee, during the inauguration of Super speciality hospital in Bangalore said, to construct this kind of hospital requires at least 10 years where as Baba has done in 10 months.

Prof.Anil Kumar got a big round of " extended" applause for a very inspiring talk. later there was a musical concert by Sri. Satish and his group which was followed by an excellent bhajan session by the 18 member UK group who had a beautiful grama seva experience.

STRIKES CALLED OFF.. EVERY THING IS BACK TO NORMAL NOW:

After 70 days of uncertainty and confusion over the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the political parties fighting for the cause temporarily called off the strike which was a big relief especially to the student community who had to lose a big chunk of their academic calender. The state run bus services, which are the life line of Andhra Pradesh also are functioning normally. Devotees who are planning a pilgrimage may come without any second thoughts.

SWAMI SAVED FROM A MAJOR DISASTER:

Cyclone Phailin, which hit few states of India was believed to be one of the most dangerous cyclones that Man kind has witnessed in the recent past but by intense prayers from the Sai Community in particular there was very less impact. The district of Srikakulam and state of Odhisha which has a very big number of Sai devotees was badly affected leaving thousands homeless. Lets pray to Swami to bring all their lives to normalcy..

'Sathya Sai with Students' Blog Update - Week 56: Vijaya Dashami and Grama Seva Special

Sai Ram,

We wish all our readers a Happy Vijaya Dashami, in advance.

This week, we have articles focussed on the Mother aspect of Divinity, the Vijaya Dashami celebrations of the days of yore, and interactions with Swami during the Grama Seva days of the last decade.

1. Discourses to Students: Among all the Mantras, Swami has always highlighted the importance of the Gayatri Mantra especially for students and spiritual aspirants. He also installed the idol of Mother Gayatri extolled as Veda Mata (Mother of the Vedas) in Prasanthi Nilayam, which is worshipped with great fanfare during the festival of Navaratri. In a two part series, we present in Swami's own words: The Glory of Gayatri - Part 2.

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/the-glory-of-gayatri-part-2.html

2. Experiences of Students: Dr. Shashank Shah writes on the theme: "The Universal Divine Mother Sai"

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/the-universal-divine-mother-sai-by-dr.html

3. Conversations with Students: As the students and staff of the Sri Sathya Sai Educational Institutions undertake the Sri Sathya Sai Grama Seva Project this week, we reminisce a conversation on November 3, 2000, when Swami conversed with students about the Grama Seva activities they undertook that day and the experiences they had while doing so - "How was the Grama Seva Today?"

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/how-was-grama-seva-today.html

4. Management Lessons: While contemporary management thinkers highlight varied concepts as crucial to the success of business, Swami highlights the Importance of Self-Management as the very core of Business Management. We recollect the His Guidelines.

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/the-importance-of-self-management.html

5. This Day That Age: We reminisce the Navaratri celebrations of 1961 when Swami declared His Divine Mission...

6. Song for the Soul: "The words of Sai are verily the Vedas - Maa Sai Maatante". As we celebrate the Navaratri Yajna and witness the glory of the Vedas, we present this song extolling the Glory of our Lord Sai.

GRAMA SEVA 2013 STARTS OCTOBER 6TH, 2013

Om Sairam dearest Sai Family

The 13th Sri Sathya Sai Grama Seva project, a very humble and loving gesture initiated by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the year 2000, which taught the man kind, " Service to Man is Service to God" started this morning at 8:30 am from the ashram. Ever since the start of this project, Grama Seva has touched millions of families, as the " Messengers of Sathya Sai Baba" His students took the blessings of Baba to the door steps.

About 40 trucks (Tata 407) filled with food packets, laddus, sarees and dhothis started off from the ashram after the students took blessings of Swami in Sai Kulwanth Hall. Sri.Rathnakar, Member of Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, Sri.Prasada Rao, Secretary and other senior members of Prasanthi Administration flagged off the convoy by offering prayers to Swami and breaking coconuts.

This year, the grama seva project will cover 153 villages within a radius or roughly 40 square kilometers. The total number of houses that would be covered would be 50,000. About 600 female students from Anantapur campus, 200 of the nursing college, devotees and staff members amounting to 1000 of them work tirelessly right through the night packing the food packets which is usually around 45,000 to 50,000. Every minute care is taken to maintain the quality, taste and hygiene of the food prepared and there are also people who make sure the weight is exactly or more than 340 gms for each packet of Tamarind Rice.

In the picture below Sri.Rathnakar and other office bearers are seen offering prayers to the trucks before they depart from the ashram..

The ever jubilant and enthusiastic students and doubly jubilant staff members of the college jumped into their  respective vans as they started from Puttaparthi. As the trucks passed by the Gopuram Gate, all the students were doing JAI KARs to Baba, the devotees also shouted, Jai Bolo Sri Sathya Sai Babaji Ki Jai..

A poor broom stick vendor looks on as Swami's Grama Seva Trucks leave Puttaparthi..

In the photo below you can see one devotee from overseas waving at the boys in the truck wishing them good luck..

The boys very lovingly wave back to her and it was pure and unsullied love that was seen this morning

After reaching the destination village, the boys do Nagar sankeertan. After offering prayers, the boys go to each  house hold and the first thing they say is " Swami has sent prasadam for you, how many are there in the family?" . Every house gets one Saree and One dhothi but food packets and laddus are given to each and every member of the family.

While in the village, the students don't have any discrimination of rich and poor, every one gets Swami's  prasadam.

People in the village await for this day very eagerly and the whole village is beautifully decorated with mango and banana leaves. The women start putting rangolis infront of their houses from early morning and they all feel as if Swami Himself is coming to their village..

NEW STATE TELANGANA TO BE FORMED AND STRIKES IN THE STATE..

As many of you are aware, the central government of India has almost decided to divide Andhra Pradesh (in  which Puttaparthi is situated) into two. This has created a huge political unrest in the state especially the non-Telangana regions (which includes Puttaparthi as well) which are against bifurcation of the state sensing so many problems in the future with regard to water sharing and other infrastructures. Its been 65 days since this part of the state has been literally shut down. The big losers are the student community as all the schools (government and private) are shut down for more than 2 months now, which is a great loss to the academic schedule.

About three days ago, the central government approved the division of the state in the cabinet meeting and this made people of Andhra pradesh more aggressive and the strike is on even in Puttaparthi.

HOW SAFE IS IT TO TRAVEL TO PUTTAPARTHI?

Many people have been wondering about it and it is absolutely SAFE to travel to Puttaparthi. There is no one out there physically attacking any one. There are road blockades and slogans are raised against the government, ministers who were frequenting Puttaparthi and have been in favour of bifurcation but nothing to do with the general public or devotees.

In case you are planning a visit to Puttaparthi, you make sure you reach Puttaparthi before 8 am and when leaving Puttaparthi, any time after 6 PM is ideal. Your taxi operator would tell you the exact situation for the day.The State run APSRTC buses and Karnataka State buses (which operate from Bangalore) are not operating since 2 months but the trains and taxi services are functioning.

Many a times, depending on the intensity and emotions on the bifurcation, the businesses in Parthi are closed from 9 am to 4 pm.

The good thing is Swami's schools, colleges, hospitals and ashram has been functioning as usual with no disturbances what so ever. So it is absolutely safe for devotees to come to Prasanthi and seek the blessings of our Lord.

In spite of limited transport facilities, the ashram is full for Dasara and more and more devotees, school children from other parts of India are coming in big groups

With pranams at the Lotus feet of our beloved Lord,

R.Satish Naik

OCTOBER 3, 2013 NEWS FROM PUTTAPARTHI

Om Sairam dearest Sai family

Lots of interesting things are happening in Puttaparthi and as Dasara is fast approaching many more activities will keep Parthi more busy..

“Sai Dhanwantari Pranamamyaham” A Programme by the Staff of Swami's General Hospital in Puttaparthi..

This evening it was the turn of the staff of General Hospital to offer their gratitude and in every second of this programme Swami's love and their love to Swami was clearly seen.. Little did any one except our Lord alone would have guessed how big the Sai Medical Care will grow while He laid the first foundation stone for a little hospital way back in 1954. It was so kind of Swami to pose for this particular photo marking a new beginning of Sathya Sai Medical Care..

The evening's programme started with a brief intro by Dr.Latha Shree and later followed few soul stirring songs by the doctors, nurses and HR staff of the hospital. In spite of a demanding schedule, they would have had a lot of rehearsals which was clearly seen in the form of perfect rendition with a matchless devotion..

What was so unique of this evening's programme was the fantastic video of Swami which had to match the song and the timing had to be maintained perfectly. Especially when brother Vivek Ananda rendered the verse, Paropa karaya Phanlanthi Vrikshaha... For the first time, we got to see some never before seen darshan clippings of Swami in Kulwanth hall and also few of His visits to the hospital.

With His grace, i hadn't been that frequent to hospital, but every time i visited i could clearly see the love and dedication in the doctors and nurses. In the big screen there was one video of Late Dr.Alreja with Swami and my childhood memories flashed in my minds. He was an iconic figure who strived relentlessly for Swami's hospital..

In between the songs there was short mention of Swami's profound messages to the doctors and it was heart touching when they paid tribute to Ms. Nagamani who passed away early this year during her pilgrimage to 4 dhams in North India, after a fall from the horse in Kedarnath.

She was a gem and a proud daughter of Swami for the kind of work she did in Swami's hospital. She came to Swami when she was only 18 remained a Brahmacharini and worked for Swami till her last breath. During this evening's programme one incident was shared about her. Once it so happened that there was shortage of doctors in the hospital and she single handedly ran the hospital attending patients. Later Swami told her, " Inspite of not having a doctor degree Nagamani did a fantastic job which even a qualified doctor wouldn't have done, " What more grace can one ask for other than getting a Doctor degree from the Divine Doctor Himself!!

She had a very sweet voice and most of the time i would see her in the pharmacy, very patiently explaining the dosage to the patients. If she saw any children in the queue they would get a chocolate along with the bitter pills. That's how sweet she was. May her soul rest in peace and hats off to the staff of the hospital for thinking of her in Sai Kulwanth Hall.

The doctors were singing like professionals and what was so unique about them was the devotion in their voice. They were singing from the heart with complete focus on Swami unlike few professional musicians who perform only to show their skills. As the programme was going live on the big screen, I could see lots of familiar faces and was surprised about their singing talents. They all are blessed souls to be direct contributors to Swami's mission and right through i was thanking Swami for making sure His hospital has world class doctors with a loving and caring heart. May all these blessed souls continue to serve in the hospital and may Swami bring many more doctors like them so that "His love" is not missed even in "His hospital".

Taking Cue from Swami's Medical Care, there are quite a few hospital projects taken up by devotees around the world. To name there this beautiful hospital project in South Africa in R.K.Khan Hospital, one of the biggest government run hospital in Durban. The Sai Organisation has taken the emergency ward, which was in a very bad shape and converted into a temple of healing with photos and sayings of Gods and Saints. This ward also portrays Swami's life size pictures, His messages and also photos of the two super speciality hospitals built by Swami..

This " Sarvadharma" ward brings solace to the patients as they can pray to their favourite diety and also read some messages from their holy books. This also has created curiosity on Swami and many non-devotee staff members in particular have started reading His literature and attend Sai Centers.

FREE MEDICAL CLINIC IN BOTSWANA...

Not many would have heard the name of this country Botswana, but Swami's work is in full swing in this little country which is predominantly a African community. Patients from any financial backgrounds are treated free of charge and the medicines are also given with no charge. The Sai Organisation in Botswana has also won the hearts of the local government for the yeomen service they are rendering to the community with no expectations what so ever.

PATIENTS WAITING OUTSIDE THE SAI CLINIC IN BOTSWANA

This is enough proof to say that Swami is very much here with us, working through us, to complete His mission..

CHITRAVATHI RIVER CLEAN UP PROGRAMME:

In the early September, few Puttaparthians decided to give a facelift to the holy river of Parthi and an important place of Swami's childhood days. If the intention is good Swami's blessings will always be with us and true enough there was heavy rain in Puttaparthi in the second week of September and Chitravathi started flowing like before..

For years, some how, people didn't realise the sanctity of this holy river. Till mid 90s or late 90s Chitravathi was flooded with rain water and was looking like a river. Later on, there were few dams built on the top, mostly in the state of Karnataka and slowly the water inflow to Chitravathi river became very less to no water. This is when people started dumping all the waste into the river and it virtually became a dump yard. A massive clean up programme was taken up by students, local youths and few staff members. Even though there is still lot to do, but it was a very good start..

Pic taken On Oct 1, 2013 shows some one has dumped the debris from a demolished house. A very rare scene in the Western world....

ARATHI TO MOTHER CHITRAVATHI:

If not daily like it happens to River Ganga in Varanasi, starting from Sept 26th Arathi is being offered to Chitravathi River on every Thursday at 6:30 PM. A perfect tribute to such a holy river which was sanctified by the touch of Sathya Sai Avatar.

SAMADHI OF SWAMI KARUNYANANDA:

Swami Karunya nanda was indeed a blessed soul to spend 4 decades with Swami. Every morning, he was the first person to visit Swami's quarters, open the door (which usually is locked from outside) and have the first padanamaskar of the day. After spending so many precious years, he merged in Swami in the year 1997. Usually most of Sai devotees who die in Parthi are cremated. There were so many instances where Swami Himself , directed to make arrangements for cremation of His close devotees.
But Swami Karunyananda is one exception who was buried and his samadhi is found in the banks of Chitravathi river. Even though Swami Karunyananda would be least bothered at the present plight of his samadhi, but as a mark of respect for such a blessed soul, it is our duty to give a face lift to this samadhi as well..

This is what Swami said about Swami Karunyananda's passing (sourced from http://www.saibaba.ws/articles/swamikarunyananda.htm )

The passing of Karunyananda (Divine Discourse, Dassera, 08 October 1997)
"You may all know what happened today. Karunyananda had been with Swami for forty years. He was a centenarian. Today his body merged in the five elements. For the passing of any person the time, the place and the circumstances have to come together. Here in this hall the recitation of the Vedas is going on. The Jnana Yajna is being performed. He was listening to all these sacred things. He went to sleep at night and passed away in his sleep. He came to me a week ago. Swami asked him. "Karunyananda! What is it you want?" He replied: "I need nothing. I only want to merge in your Lotus Feet. There is no purpose in my continuing." I asked him why he was speaking in this manner: "What more is there for me to enjoy in life? I have experienced everything. I have stayed and moved with Swami for forty years."
He came with me to Kashmir and Shimla, Gaya and Prayag. He came with me to all places, wherever I went. Staying with me, he passed away with a sense of fulfillment."

GRAMA SEVA 2013 TO START FROM OCTOBER 5TH.

Like every year, this year's Grama Seva, a beautiful initiative by Swami to send food and clothing to the door steps of poor villagers around Puttaparthi will start from October 5th 2013. After Swami's physical withdrawal, many critics were doubtful about the continuation of this programme, but when Swami wills, there is no way such a noble act would stop. Three years have passed by and every year there are few more villages that are added on requests from villagers. This year, the Grama Seva will be covered to a minimum of 50,000 beneficiaries and all the arrangements have been made for the same.

The cooks, rice and other provisions are ready. The students who would be going to the villages, passing Swami's prasad to every door step are ready. The students of Swami's college are very privileged, that they get a chance to see the grass root level citizens of the country and the poverty they are facing but with a smile.. Swami definitely had a very big Master plan for starting this programme and there is no country, no Sai Center which is not practicing this model of Delivering "Swami's Love" at the door step of the needy..

Sri. Puppet from the UK inspite of ill health has come once again with 18 boys to take part in this year's Grama Seva Project. As we all know the UK youths are the only " Non-Student community" who are blessed by Bhagawan to take part in Grama Seva. Over the years, many youths from the UK have been blessed to be part of this programme and it is a huge cultural and social shock for them to see the poorest of the poor and develop the spirit of sacrifice and seva from a very young age.

As if like some kind of biological clock, every one in my family were shocked today, when my 4 year old son came up to me and asked , " When is Swami sending Laddus to our home". There are no words to describe the great joy when Swami's students come to our door step and say, Swami has sent you this prasad. It is during this season, we get to taste the unique Pulihora/pulisadam/tamarind rice which tastes the best when Swami sends them through His students...

A NEW VIDEO OF PROF.ANIL KUMAR

Taken from his recently concluded visit to South Africa, please watch this important satsang addressed to the Youth. The message in this talk is very profound and the questions which were asked at the end of this talk were bit delicate but the answers would definitely help the youth to concentrate more on Sai and the mission of Sai..

'Sathya Sai with Students' Blog Update - Week 55: Navaratri Special

Sai Ram,

As the festival of Navaratri commences this weekend, the life at Prasanthi Nilayam will revolve around the Yajnam in Poornachandra Auditorium. We wish all our readers a spiritually fulfilling week ahead.

This week we have articles focussed on the Mother aspect of Divinity and the Dasera celebrations of the days of yore.

In a two part series, we present in Swami's own words: The Glory of Gayatri.

2. Experiences of Students: Brother Sai Shyam Sharma writes on theme: "My Beloved Mother Sai"

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/my-beloved-mother-sai-by-sai-shyam.html

3. Conversations with Students: In a conversation on October 11, 1991, Swami converses with students on the importance of Character over money: "Even little money is good enough... But character must be Good"

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/even-little-money-is-good-enough-but.html

4. Management Lessons: The focus of managers as individuals and management as a profession is becoming increasingly commercial in contemporary times. In His inimitable way, Swami has redefined the term 'Manager' and elaborated on every alphabet of this word. We culminate with the seventh part of this multi-part series on the theme in Bhagavan's own words: MANAGER Redefined - Part 7

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/manager-redefined-part-7.html

5. This Day That Age: We reminisce the very first Dasera celebrated at Puttaparthi in 1946 when "The Petrol Engine worked on Water"

http://sathyasaiwithstudents.blogspot.in/2013/10/when-petrol-engine-worked-on-water.html

6. Song for the Soul: As the auspicious festival of Navaratri commences from Saturday, we present the Stotram on the glory of Mother Goddess composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya and sung by students in His Divine Presence on many occasions: Mahishaasura Mardini Stotram. As per the scriptures, to sing this Stotram daily during the Navaratri Festival is considered very meritorious.

Prof. Haraldsson talks about Sai Baba miracles in UK Radio Talk Show in 2012

Sai Ram,

The following compilation by Mr. Ravi Iyer, former faculty, DMACS, SSSIHL is about a talk show where a renowned parapsychologist from Iceland spoke about his experiences on Swami, His Divinity and miracles... We often take for granted Swami's Divinity. But there have been world-renowned experts who have studied it for decades and have shared with the world their deep convictions based on their scientific understanding.

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Dear reader,

I came across, "Past Lives, Apparitions and Sai Baba with Erlendur Haraldsson", http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8P_FnfUjoog, which is an audio only youtube video (almost frozen picture) where Prof. Haraldsson, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erlendur_Haraldsson, https://notendur.hi.is/~erlendur/english/, is politely dismissive of UK Radio Talk Show hosts' (in mid 2012) jocular reference to Swami's miracles, and asserts that the miracles are genuine. The weight of Prof. Haraldsson's stature as an eminent and veteran parapsychologist changes the tone of the UK Radio Talk Show hosts in this regard! They become far more respectful in their references to Sai Baba later on in the interview with him!

Note: The part transcripts below may have some minor inaccuracies/typos but I believe they have captured the sense of the matter properly. I am not able to spare the time to review the part transcripts for errors.

The Erlendur Haraldsson part of the video (audio) starts at slightly after 33 min. This part starts with the talk show hosts mentioning that Prof. Haraldsson has been featured on BBC, Discovery channel and Channel 4.

On being questioned about how he got into study of the paranormal, Prof. Erlendur Haraldsson (EH) mentions interactions with Prof. Hans Bender (in Germany), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Bender , Prof. Rhine in USA, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Banks_Rhine, and Prof. Ian Stevenson of University of Virginia, USA, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Stevenson . [Ravi: These seem to be very big names of the past in the parapsychology field. Prof. Jim Tucker of University of Virginia, USA, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_B._Tucker, is continuing with Prof. Ian Stevenson's research into past life memories of some children.]

The interview then covers EH's investigations into interactions with the departed (contact with the dead) that some people (in Europe) have had.

Then it moves onto EH's investigations into past lives remembered by some children in places like Sri Lanka and Lebanon.

Around 01:04:55 one of the (two) talk show hosts moves the topic to Sai Baba - the host says that his parents were devotees of Sai Baba for some time in London and that he too had attended numerous prayer meetings. The hosts then jocularly mention that they were not aware that EH was an investigator of the "miracles, shall we say" of Sai Baba. The host says that Sai Baba has passed on (the interview seems to have been conducted sometime in the middle of 2012). [Ravi: The way the hosts jocularly mention miracles shows how much they doubted it. The media, especially the Western media, as well as the scientific/rationalist establishment has ensured that such a wrong view of Sai Baba's miracles has been spread among its readers/viewers.]

Around 01:07:20
EH says, "So I spent a lot of time studying Sai Baba and I wrote, in the end, a book about him, Miracles are my visiting cards. In America it was published as Modern Miracles. So I became quite involved with the study of the phenomena of Sai Baba. And he was really very remarkable. There were claims of paranormal phenomena, or miracles, if you like, that are very unique. And some of them even look like the miracles described in the New Testament." [Ravi: Wow! I salute Prof. Haraldsson for courageously stating his view based on his observations. Such statements can invite horrific attack from some rationalist and atheist-scientists who try to tear apart the reputation of scientists making such statements. Very few scientists and academics have the courage that Prof. Haraldsson has shown to publicly make positive statements about Swami's miracles as they perhaps are afraid of the attack they will come under from their peers, especially from the West.]...

EH says, "One thing was very striking that he would do this so often (materialization miracles - rings, pendants, fruits, sweets etc.). I think my estimate was that he might produce like twenty everyday and that was just day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. And he gave all this material away. But then, of course, magicians can let appear in their hands various things. But they don't give it away (laughter). They do not give away gold rings, jewellery."...

Talk show host talks about magic tricks' charges. Around 01:09:57 EH says, "Unfortunately the critics - and I have studied them very carefully and interviewed some of them - his most severe critics as far as the normal explanation is concerned have never really come close to him. They have never observed him. They have never bothered to look up the whole evidence - not just individual, single instances. Maybe it was trickery, but then it was trickery of a greater kind than we have ever seen by any magician before."...

"He would produce things, like on the spur of the moment. And so it was a response to something that came up in the conversation. Like I remember once when we were trying to get him involved in experiments. And he always wanted to talk about religion and religious life and so on. But we were, of course, interested in experiments and scientific view. He said, one day, that daily life and spiritual life should be like a double rudraksha. Well, I had never heard what a rudraksha is. My colleague, Karlis Osis, didn't know what a rudraksha is. So I asked him what is a rudraksha, what is a double rudraksha? And he tried to explain but couldn't do it. Our interpreter couldn't understand it - couldn't explain it either. But I was very insistent on this and asked him some 3-4 times. So in the end he seems to lose patience and then just waved his hand and then opened the palm and showed me - this is it. And then there was a rudraksha in his palm. So sometimes these things seem to appear spontaneously."

Talk show host, "What is a rudraksha?" EH says, "Well, you asked like I did. (Laughter). A rudraksha is a kernel of a fruit like a (stone) plum. And a rudraksha is a very famous kernel of fruit in India ..."

Around 01:13:30 EH says, "Vibhuti serves a similar role in Hinduism as bread or wine in Christianity. And he often produces this - more often than anything else. And gives it to people very freely. Sometimes this vibhuti appears on like photos of him or other *** deities and for (in) an inexplicable way - and I have visited many, many such places in India, in Sri Lanka, even in England, in London, and in United States. ...

Well, I can tell you one story. I was (once) going to Sri Lanka. But I had to stop in Lebanon and they hadn't had the time to get my visa for Sri Lanka, here in Iceland. ... So I decided to get my visa for Sri Lanka in the embassy in Beirut. So I went there, filled out the form. They told me, if I had patience I could wait for it. Then after a while one of the secretaries came and told me, the consul would like to see me. So I went to see the consul. Then he was with my passport in his hand. And said, your name sounds familiar to me. Did you not write a book about Sai Baba? Yes, I had written a book. Then he told me then I must tell about something that happened to me. He told me that he had a daughter - he was an elderly man, about 60 or little older - and she had, at that time, been very sick. And he feared about her life. So he decided - he had been told that sometimes it might help to pray for (to) Sai Baba for help - and he did that. And his daughter recovered for whatever reason. Then he was so happy with this that then he got a photograph of Sai Baba in a large frame and hung it up in his apartment.

Then he told me, soon after that, there started to come some dust on the cover of the photo. And he told me - I live upstairs in this building. Would you like to see it? So he invited me up to his apartment. And there in his bedroom opposite to his bed was a large framed photograph of Sai Baba ... Then I saw that on the glass were streaks of vibhuti on it. Also between the glass and the photo. And he had never opened the frame. So it was a mystery to him how this had happened. But this man, this consul, he told me that he had never seen Sai Baba. He had no particular connection with him. But apart from his praying for help at one time, and being impressed with Sai Baba since. So, how did this happen? (At a) long distance. And there are many distance phenomena like that.

Those who say that this is all easily explainable, I think they do not consider, they do not look at the full picture. They just take one or two little instances which may be explained easily."

[Ravi: I think Prof. Haraldsson has made a vital point. Those who try to explain away Swami's miracles take a few instances and focus only on them. They do not look at the full picture! Once one brings in the full picture - many materializations of great variety day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year - explaining them away as normal magic tricks simply does not sound sensible. It is the observation and interrogation of devotees that Prof. Haraldsson has done over a span of four decades that makes him state that Swami's miracles, when taken as a full picture, cannot be explained away (as normal magic tricks). He has not made this statement or arrived at this conclusion casually and hurriedly. He has been thorough about his investigation and interrogation over a large span of time and then arrived at this conclusion.]

Around 1:22:30
Talk show host - "You were there and you saw him. What was your feeling about the whole thing, about him? How do you feel yourself about him? The man. Do you think he actually had paranormal powers?"

EH says, "Well, when I look at the cases I studied and also some of the things I observed it is hard not to think that he had some paranormal abilities.... And there really hasn't been anyone like him."

Talk show host, "No. And I have known of nuclear scientists and all kinds of people who were devotees of Sai Baba. ... Most impressive type of people."

Regards

Ravi
